GlossarySMA 100

SMA 100

The SMA 100 is the simple average of the chart's last 100 closes. It sits between the medium-term SMA 50 and the long-term SMA 200.

Calculation

Each of the 100 candles counts equally, 1% each. The line only starts at the 100th candle. It is calculated on the chart's candles: over 100 days on the daily chart, so about 20 trading weeks for stocks. The current candle counts at its current price.

What it is used for

  • As support in deeper corrections, when the price has already fallen below the SMA 50.
  • As a calm trend filter that changes sides less often than the SMA 50 and reacts earlier than the SMA 200.
  • Together with the SMA 50 and SMA 200: if the three are stacked in order and rising, the trend points up across all lengths.

It is less widely used than the SMA 50 and SMA 200, so it acts less often as a level many traders watch at the same time.
