ChartChart types and intervals
Chart types and intervals
All 22 chart types, from candles to tick and volume bars, and all intervals from one second to twelve months.
You set the chart type and interval in the top bar, directly to the right of the exchange aggregation. Both belong to your workspace and can be undone with CtrlZ.
Choose a chart type
- Click the button with the icon of the current type (for example “Candles”) in the top bar.
- Choose a type from one of the four groups.
It's faster through the super search (CtrlK): type “Chart type” or the name, such as “Renko”. The Switch to line chart command toggles between candles and line.
Candles
| Type | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Candles | Open, high, low and close as a candle, colored by direction. |
| Hollow candles | Rising candles as an outline only, falling ones filled. |
| Heikin Ashi | Smoothed average candles. The legend, last price and scale still show the real prices. |
| Volume candles | Candles whose width grows with volume (relative to the largest candle in view). |
| Bars (OHLC) | A vertical stroke from high to low, open on the left, close on the right. |
| High-low | Only the range from high to low, in a neutral color. |
Lines
| Type | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Line | The closing prices as a line. |
| Line with markers | The line with a dot on each close, as soon as there is enough room. |
| Step line | The close stays horizontal until the next candle, then a step follows. |
| Area | The line above an area that fades out toward the bottom. |
| HLC area | The band between highs and lows, with the close on top. |
| Baseline | The line split at the current price: above it in the color for Up, below it in the color for Down. The baseline stays at this price when you move the chart; the last-price line marks it. |
| Columns | One column per candle from the close down to the bottom edge, colored by comparison with the previous close. |
Non-time-based
These types build their own bars that aren't tied to fixed time intervals. The time axis still shows the real time for each bar. The terminal sets the size of the boxes and ranges itself, to fit the movement of the last 240 or so candles of your interval. You can't adjust them.
| Type | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Renko | Bricks of a fixed size. A new brick forms when the price moves one box size beyond the last one; a reversal takes two boxes. |
| Range bars | Each bar spans exactly one fixed price range. |
| Line break | A new line on a close above or below the last line; a reversal only when the price breaks the extreme of the last three lines. |
| Kagi | A line that only turns when the price reverses by a minimum amount. Above the previous high it gets thick, below the previous low thin. |
| Point & figure | Columns of X (rising) and O (falling); a new column after a countermove of three boxes. |
| Tick bars | One bar per fixed number of trades. |
| Volume bars | One bar per fixed traded volume. |
The terminal calculates Renko, range bars, line break, Kagi and point & figure from 1-minute candles, and further back from the candles of your interval. Live, they rebuild at most once per second.
Tick and volume bars
Tick and volume bars need individual trades, not candles. That's why they have their own limits:
- They are only available for crypto with live data.
- The history goes back one hour at most, plus everything that comes in live after you open the chart.
- The terminal aims for about 240 bars for the available period.
- With these types, the CVD and volume delta panes use the trades of each individual bar.
- If you pause the live data (super search, “Pause live data”), the bars stand still too. Trades from the pause are not caught up.
Without trades, the chart shows a notice instead of bars, for example “No trade data for ….”
Order flow
| Type | Plan | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Footprint | Pro | Buy and sell volume per price level in each candle. |
| TPO / Market Profile | Pro | Time per price as a letter or block profile; needs an interval of 1h or less. |
Both are described in detail under Order flow. Without Pro, the chart stays on candles and the terminal shows which plan includes the chart type. If you set TPO on an interval above 1h, the terminal reminds you: “TPO / Market Profile needs an interval of 1h or less”.
Choose an interval
Click the interval in the top bar (for example 1h). The menu has three parts:
- at the top, a field for custom intervals,
- below it, your favorites as chips,
- and the list of all fixed intervals, grouped:
| Group | Intervals |
|---|---|
| SECONDS | 1s, 5s, 15s, 30s |
| MINUTES | 1m, 3m, 5m, 15m, 30m, 45m |
| HOURS | 1h, 2h, 3h, 4h, 6h, 8h, 12h |
| DAYS | 1d, 3d |
| WEEKS | 1w |
| MONTHS | 1M, 3M, 6M, 12M |
Weekly candles start on Monday, monthly candles on the first of the month, both in UTC.
Custom intervals
- Open the interval menu. The field “Interval, e.g. 7m, 2h, 3d” already has focus.
- Type a number with up to three digits and a unit:
s(seconds),m(minutes),h(hours),d(days),w(weeks) orM(months). - Press Enter.
Case matters: 3m is three minutes, 3M three months. The longest interval is twelve months. Custom intervals you've used stay in the list, the last eight.
Favorites
The star next to an interval adds it to your favorites. Favorites appear as chips at the top of the menu and are the steps for . (next interval) and , (previous interval). By default, these are 1m, 5m, 15m, 1h, 4h and 1d.
Not every interval fits every symbol
Intervals that aren't available for the symbol are grayed out in the list; the tooltip gives the reason.
- Seconds are only available for crypto, and not for every coin.
- Daily candles only apply to series such as BTC.D, USDT.D, TOTAL, US02Y and US30Y. If you switch to such a symbol with a shorter interval, the chart jumps to
1d. - Stocks, forex, commodities and indices: short intervals don't go back as far as daily candles and longer.
How to frame a specific period such as “1J” or “YTD” is explained in Scale and view.
