GlossarySMA 200 · 1D

SMA 200 · 1D

The 200-day average, fixed to daily candles: it shows the same line on every chart interval, whether on the 15-minute, the 4-hour or the weekly chart. This lets you see the best-known long-term trend level even in short-term trading.

Calculation

The last 200 daily closes are averaged. It is always calculated on the symbol's daily candles over its entire history, never on the chart's candles. For crypto, 200 daily candles are 200 calendar days, a little over six and a half months. For stocks, they are 200 trading days, about 40 weeks.

On other intervals

Each chart candle shows the value of the last daily candle already completed at the chart candle's close.

  • Daily chart: exactly the ordinary SMA 200.
  • Below 1D (such as 1H or 4H): The line runs smoothly from daily close to daily close. Each daily value sits exactly where its daily candle closes, and a straight line connects the two values in between. The last segment leads to the value of the current day, with the current price as a provisional close, and moves with the price until the daily close.
  • Above 1D (such as 1W): Each candle shows the 200-day average at the last daily close within it.

How to read it

  • Price above a rising SMA 200 · 1D counts as a long-term uptrend, below it as a downtrend.
  • Many market participants trade at this line. First tests after a long run therefore get particular attention, as support from above or resistance from below.
  • The price's distance from the line shows how far a market has moved from its long-term mean.
Note The normal SMA 200 counts the chart's candles. On the 4H chart, that is only a little over 33 days. This entry is therefore called “SMA 200 · 1D” and stays the 200-day average on every interval.

Settings

Length and timeframe are fixed. Under Appearance, you only choose how the line is drawn. For a different length on a daily basis, use the Simple Moving Average (SMA) with Timeframe 1D.

Limitations

The line only starts once 200 daily candles are available. For assets that have been trading for less than 200 days, it stays empty.
