GlossaryCumulative volume delta (CVD)
Cumulative volume delta (CVD)
Cumulative Volume Delta (CVD) keeps a running total of each candle's delta: aggressive buys minus aggressive sells. When it rises, buyers have put more pressure on the market over time than sellers. It is most useful compared with the price, for example when the two diverge.
How to read it
- The absolute level depends on how far back the chart is loaded. Read direction, highs and lows, not the number.
- Divergence: The price makes a higher high, the CVD a lower one. The rise is carried by fewer aggressive buys and is more vulnerable. The reverse applies at a low.
- Absorption: The CVD falls clearly, the price holds. Limit buyers are absorbing the sells.
- Spot vs. perps: Add the CVD twice, once with Spot, once with Perps. If the price rises mainly with the perp CVD, leverage is driving the move; with the spot CVD, real demand.
Limitations
- The CVD is only available for cryptocurrencies.
- Binance (taker volume) describes one exchange, not the whole market.
- Shaded candles have no data.
- If you pause the live data in the footer bar, no more trades go into the current candle.
