GlossaryNetwork hashrate

Network hashrate

The total computing power of the Bitcoin network in exahashes per second, as a line in its own pane below a miner's chart, for every day since the network began. It is the competition every miner mines against: if the hashrate grows faster than the miner's own, its share of the rewards falls.

What is drawn

Each point is the estimated computing power of the network on one day, in EH/s (one quintillion hashes per second).

How to read it

  • Rising hashrate: New machines are coming online, usually because mining pays off. For the individual miner, that means more competition.
  • Drops happen when miners switch off: during power shortages, storms, or when the hashprice falls below their costs.
  • Together with Hashprice, you can see whether revenue per unit of computing power keeps pace with the network's growth.

The pane has a logarithmic axis, as with the hashprice. The label on the axis shows the latest value in EH/s.

Good to know

  • Bitcoin miners only. The line shows the entire network, not the computing power of the individual company.
