GlossaryVolume
Volume
Volume shows, as columns along the bottom edge of the main chart, how much was traded in each candle. You can see how much participation is behind a price move.
How to read it
- If the price rises on growing volume, many market participants are carrying the move. A breakout on high volume is more reliable than one on thin volume.
- Columns well above the average mark unusual activity, often at turning points or on news.
- Declining volume in a trend shows that fewer and fewer participants are following.
Note The color only tells you whether the candle closed up or down. It doesn't show whether the volume came from aggressive buys or sells. That is what the CVD is for.
Good to know
- Because the scale depends on the visible maximum, column heights change as you scroll and zoom. Only compare columns within one view.
- Symbols without volume, such as some indexes, show no columns.
