GlossaryFear & Greed Index

Fear & Greed Index

The Fear & Greed Index sums up the sentiment in the crypto market in a number between 0 (extreme fear) and 100 (extreme greed). It helps you spot excesses in either direction.

How to read it

The axis always shows the full 0–100 scale, with lines at 25, 50 and 75.

  • As a contrarian indicator, with patience: In hindsight, extreme fear was often a good area to enter, extreme greed a bad one.
  • The index stays in the extremes for weeks. More telling than the lowest point is the turn out of fear, and conversely the tipping point out of greed.
  • It measures sentiment, not valuation: a market in fear can still fall further.

Good to know

  • The index describes the crypto market. On a stock or forex chart, the pane still shows this crypto sentiment.
  • One value per day, without decimals. It counts as current for two days; if the latest one is older, the line ends and the pane header shows “Fear & Greed · As of {date}”.
  • The same series with zones and metrics is available as the study “mantacharts: BTC Fear & Greed Index”.
  • The only settings are on the Style tab: Appearance (default: line). Without Study colors, the curve appears in a single color; the shaded areas stay.
