GlossaryEMA 9

EMA 9

The EMA 9 is an exponential moving average of the chart's last 9 candles. It hugs the price and shows short-term momentum.

Calculation

EMAt=α Ct+(1−α) EMAt−1,α=29+1=0.2\mathrm{EMA}_t = \alpha\,C_t + (1-\alpha)\,\mathrm{EMA}_{t-1}, \qquad \alpha = \frac{2}{9+1} = 0.2

CtC_t is the close of candle tt. The first value is the average of the first 9 closes; after that, each new candle enters with 20%. It is calculated on the chart's candles: over 45 minutes on the 5-minute chart, over 9 days on the daily chart. The current candle counts with its current price.

What it is used for

  • As a short-term trend filter in intraday trading: as long as the price closes above a rising EMA 9, momentum is intact.
  • In strong trends as a tight trailing stop or as a first target for pullbacks.
  • Paired with an EMA 20 or 21: if the EMA 9 crosses the longer one upward, short-term momentum turns up; downward, it turns down.

Because it reacts so quickly, it produces many false signals in sideways phases.
