GlossaryEMA 100

EMA 100

The EMA 100 is an exponential moving average of the chart's last 100 candles. It sits between the medium-term EMA 50 and the long-term EMA 200 and often serves as an intermediate level in deep corrections.

Calculation

EMAt=α Ct+(1−α) EMAt−1,α=2100+1≈0.0198\mathrm{EMA}_t = \alpha\,C_t + (1-\alpha)\,\mathrm{EMA}_{t-1}, \qquad \alpha = \frac{2}{100+1} \approx 0.0198

CtC_t is the close of candle tt. The first value is the average of the first 100 closes; after that, each new candle enters with just under 2%. It is calculated on the chart's candles: over a little more than four days on the 1H chart, over 100 days on the daily chart. The current candle counts with its current price.

What it is used for

  • As support when a correction has fallen through the EMA 50 but the long-term trend is still intact.
  • As a calmer trend filter than the EMA 50, one that changes sides less often.
  • Together with the EMA 50 and EMA 200 as a fan: if all three are stacked in order and rising, the trend points up across all lengths.

It is less widely used than the EMA 50 and EMA 200. As a level that many participants watch at the same time, it therefore carries less weight.
