GlossaryBitcoin transaction fees (daily total)
Bitcoin transaction fees (daily total)
Fee pressure on the Bitcoin network: the sum of all transaction fees paid in a day in US dollars, as a multiple of its moving yearly average. Fee spikes show phases when many people want into the next blocks at once, often during hype or panic.
Zones
| Zone | Range |
|---|---|
| Calm | below 1× |
| Elevated | 1 to 2× |
| High | 2 to 4× |
| Fee spike | from 4× |
The thresholds are based on the distribution over the entire history: the median day is at about 0.85×, the top quarter starts at about 2.1×, and only about 9% of days reach 4×. The 1 is drawn as a bold midline.
How to read it
Spikes coincide with bottlenecks: price jumps, panic selling or waves of new transaction types. Long quiet phases below 1 show a network with spare capacity.
Good to know
- What is measured is the daily total, not the fee per transaction. More transactions at the same individual fee also lift the curve.
- The first line appears after one year of data. Bitcoin only, intended for daily to weekly charts, with no settings other than appearance.
