GlossaryBitcoin Dominance Trend
Bitcoin Dominance Trend
Bitcoin's share of total crypto market cap, read against its own 200-day average. Above the average, capital tends to flow into Bitcoin; below it, into altcoins: the curve doesn't answer whether the market is rising, but who is benefiting.
On the chart
- The main line is dominance; the average runs beside it as a gray line.
- The main line's color compares with the current average: green above the last value of the gray line, red below it. A subtle middle line sits at this value.
- To see whether dominance was above its then-current average at an earlier point, look at the distance to the gray line.
How to read it
| Situation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Dominance above the average, market rising | Bitcoin leads, altcoins lag behind |
| Dominance below the average, market rising | Capital rotates into altcoins |
| Dominance above the average, market falling | Retreat into Bitcoin, altcoins fall harder |
| Dominance below the average, market falling | Bitcoin gives back more than average |
Crossovers with the average, and how long dominance stays on one side, matter more than individual candles.
Good to know
- The curve doesn't depend on your chart's symbol: it shows the same dominance on every chart, and your chart only supplies the time axis.
- Intended for daily to weekly charts; on hourly candles, the same daily value stands across many candles.
