Macro panes and market data
DXY, US10Y, M2, Fear & Greed, COT, prediction markets, and news on the chart, with their release schedules.
The Macro category brings the market's environment next to the price: the dollar, interest rates, the money supply, sentiment, bets on price levels, and news. You'll find it under Top bar → Indicators → Macro. At the very top are the basic panes this page describes. The mantacharts studies below them are explained in Macro studies.
Macro panes work on every symbol, because their series doesn't depend on the chart.
How current is a macro value?
Macro data arrives at its own pace: the dollar index every trading day, the money supply once a month with a delay of several weeks. On an hourly chart, one value therefore spans many candles. So that nothing outdated looks live, a value only counts for as long as its release schedule allows (“Counts as current” in the tables below). If the latest point is older than that, the line ends there.
Apart from the Style tab, the panes have no settings.
US Dollar Index (DXY)
The strength of the US dollar against a basket of major currencies. In the pane, it is called “DXY”.
How to read it: A rising dollar drains liquidity from risk assets worldwide and has often moved against Bitcoin in the past. A falling dollar has usually been a tailwind.
| Frequency | one value per trading day |
| Counts as current | 5 days, so that weekends and holidays don't count as a gap |
US government bonds 10Y
The yield on 10-year US government bonds, “US10Y” in the pane, in percent. It is the benchmark rate for valuing almost all assets.
How to read it: Rising yields make holding assets without interest income more costly and have historically weighed on growth and crypto valuations. Falling yields ease conditions.
| Frequency | one value per trading day, set in the afternoon New York time |
| Counts as current | 5 days |
The full yield curve with all maturities is shown by the study “mantacharts: US government bonds (yield curve)” under Macro studies.
M2 money supply
The US money supply M2 in trillions of dollars, “M2 (US)” in the pane. A growing money supply is considered a tailwind for scarce assets such as Bitcoin.
| Frequency | one value per month, dated to the first of the month and published about seven weeks later |
| Counts as current | 95 days |
Fear & Greed Index
Market sentiment as a number from 0 (extreme fear) to 100 (extreme greed). Lines at 25, 50, and 75. Below 25 the curve turns red, from 75 turquoise, with gradations in between.
How to read it: As a contrarian indicator, with patience. In hindsight, extreme fear has often been a good entry zone and extreme greed a bad one. But the index can stay at extremes for weeks. The turn out of fear says more than the lowest point.
| Frequency | one value per day |
| Counts as current | 2 days |
The same series with zones and metrics is available as the study “mantacharts: BTC Fear & Greed Index”.
COT positioning
The weekly data from the US futures market regulator, the CFTC: how groups of traders are positioned in the futures markets, who is long and who is short. The entry doesn't draw anything on the chart; it opens the COT report widget in a widget column. A second click on “✓ Active” closes it again.
The data is as of Tuesday each week, and the CFTC publishes it on Fridays at 3:30 p.m. New York time. More on the widget under Data widgets.
Prediction markets at price (Bitcoin only)
Bets on prediction markets of the kind “Bitcoin above $90,000 on …” as yellow dashed lines at their price level. At the right edge, you see for example “90K · 58% ↑ · Oct 31”: the level, the probability the market assigns to it, and the day the bet ends. If you move the crosshair onto a line, the market's question appears in the legend with its odds and exchange.
How to read them: The lines show how likely the betting market considers each price level. They mix different durations, which is why each line carries its date.
- Markets without a price level stay in the “Prediction markets” widget, as do levels more than ten times away from the price.
- The gear in the legend opens the “Prediction markets” widget. The entry has no settings of its own.
News in the chart
News items and economic events as markers along the bottom of the price pane: M for macro (yellow), K for crypto, and R for regulation (in the text color). Important items are larger. Upcoming events are hollow and have a dashed line going up; the chart leaves room for this to the right of the last candle. If several events are close together, their number appears on the marker. Hover over a marker to see the category, date, title, and source.
| Setting | Default |
|---|---|
| Macro events | on |
| Crypto & regulation | on |
| High relevance only | off |
What the chart shows:
- News items from the last 30 days. Crypto news about other coins stays off the chart; macro and regulation apply to all.
- Events: economic data, option and futures expiries, and the Fed's rate decisions, up to 60 days ahead. The chart doesn't show events of low importance.
The full news stream and calendar are in the “News & calendar” widget, see Data widgets.
